The Town of Gate City lies in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, an area rich in both Pioneer and Native American history. With a population of 2,034, Gate City is seat of Scott County’s government, and was founded and still is the principal gateway from Tennessee through Virginia to Kentucky. We are located only 10 minutes from Kingsport and 20 from Johnson City.

The Gate City Police Department is currently overseen by Acting Chief of Police Scott Fink. If you have an Emergency it is always best to call 911 Direct as they will be able to dispatch the closest officer to your location.

Our Public Works Supervisor is Stoney Falin, who oversees and coordinates our Town Crew with the help of; Mark Falin, Gary Dougherty, Jerry Fleenor, Brian Dingus, & Matthew Ison

Brush & Junk Pickup is tentatively scheduled to take place Thursday of each week. If there is a water leak or other emergency pick up may be delayed. Please call Town Hall to place a work order. Our Water Plant Operator is Loretta Cruby & Wendell Daughtery II

TOWN COUNCIL

The Town Council meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall. Special meetings of council can be found on the town calendar. Much of the Town Council minutes are available online through our Archived Minutes Page and additional minutes are available by contacting the Town Clerk.

BOARDS & COMMISSIONS

The Town Council relies on several boards and commissions to carry out the duties of government. These boards are staffed by volunteers. All meetings are open to the public and information for most Boards and the Council appear on the Town Calendar.

PLANNING COMMISSION meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month. The Commission reviews ordinances, subdivision and zoning requests, and performs research for the Town Council. Council Member, Roger Cassell. Minutes

SANITATION AUTHORITY meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. The Authority deals with matters related to sewerage within the town. Although appointed by council, the Authority is an independent legal entity. Council Member, Roger Cassell Minutes

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND REVILTALIZATION (EDARC) is tasked with business development and the promotion of Gate City's downtown. The committee meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at Town Hall at 6:30 p.m.

The Town offers residents a quiet location with several vintage and antique stores, as well as department stores, hardware stores, supermarkets, several restaurants, a park with little league baseball facilities, an elementary, middle and high school and much more, all with quick access to a major metropolitan area in neighboring Kingsport.
